Two probiotic products that could boost organic production of vegetables and other crops were recently released by the Lactobiotics Worldwide Corporation based in Cebu City.
These are the Lacto Plant and Grego Gro which have proven to be effective in boosting crop production by Cebuano and Boholano farmers who were among the first to use the two organic products in their farms.
Lacto Plant is a liquid product that is sprayed on the plants as well as in the soil. This serves as a foliar fertilizer that also serves as an insect repellant. It also contains millions of beneficial microorganisms that suppress the harmful microorganisms in the field.
Lactobacilli and other beneficial microbes in Lacto Plant produce natural antimicrobials that inhibit the growth of disease organisms. Through competitive exclusion, these beneficial microorganisms will quickly dominate the soil, reducing the bad organisms to zero.
The company claims that Lacto Plant contains substantial amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These elements are needed by plants for growth, flowering and fruiting. It also contains micronutrients, enzymes and amino acids required for healthy plants.
Healthy plants are more resistant against the attack of pests and diseases when compared to neglected and sick plants. Beneficial microbes which inhabit the soil as well as in the plants help protect the plants against diseases.
The other probiotic recently released by the company is Grego Gro. This is a soil enhancer and conditioner. It is 100 percent vermicompost loaded with millions of beneficial microorganisms and abundant organic matter or humus for basal or root application to start vigorous and natural plant growth, resistant to attacks of pests and diseases, and capable of sustaining total plant development.
